Side Effects of Doxepin

How should I take Doxepin?

Doxepin comes as a capsule, or a concentrate (liquid) which is to be taken orally. It is usually taken one to three times a day and may be taken with or without food. It is best to try and take doxepin at around the same time(s) every day.

Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take doxepin exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

There are also topical forms of doxepin as well.

What should I do if I forget a dose of Doxepin (for anxiety and depression)?

According to MedlinePlus.gov, you should take the missed dose of doxepin as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for your next dose of doxepin, then you should skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of doxepin to make up for a missed one.

What should I do if I forget a dose of Silenor (Doxepin)?

Silenor should only be taken at bedtime. If you did not take this medication before you went to bed and you are having trouble sleeping, you may take it if you will be able to stay in bed for at least 7 to 8 hours afterward. Do not take a double dose of silenor to make up for a missed dose.

Warnings (Overdose)

In case of overdose, call the poison control helpline at 1-800-222-1222. Information is also available online at PoisonHelp.org/Help. If the victim has collapsed, had a seizure, has trouble breathing, or can’t be awakened, immediately call emergency services at 911.

Furthermore, you should not take doxepin if you have glaucoma or problems with urination. You should not use doxepin if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days, such as isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, or tranylcypromine, according to Drugs.com.

Additionally, for some people taking antidepressants, suicidal thoughts may occur or become more persistent. If this is the case for you, then you should contact the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255 immediately.

How Much Does Doxepin Cost?

Although the cost of this psychiatric medication is dependent upon many factors, such as what type of insurance you have and what is covered under your specific insurance plan, the cost of doxepin out-of-pocket is usually less than $20.

That is, of course, the price for the generic version of the medication. The price for the brand name will likely be much more expensive. For example, the cost for Prudoxin topical cream 5% is around $700 for a supply of 45 grams, depending on the pharmacy you visit.

Silenor, on the other hand, is less expensive as it typically costs around $208 for 30 3-mg or 6-mg tablets.

As a general rule, it’s always best to search online for coupons or ask your doctor or pharmacist if any coupons exist for your prescription. It never hurts to ask and there may in deed be some extra savings available for you to take advantage of.
