The Damage to Others Done by an Individual’s Alcoholism

When a person is suffering from alcoholism, they are of course a victim. But that doesn’t mean that they’re the only one who suffers. It’s so often the case that other people around the person going through the addiction are damaged and hurt just as much as the individual themselves.

First of all, there’s the stress that comes through seeing a person they love destroy their life and continually damage their health through their addictive behaviors. On top of that, it’s also the sense of powerlessness that people often find most difficult to deal with and most frustrated because there’s usually little to do.

It’s also often the case that the loved ones around the person going through an addiction to alcohol are forced to choose between supporting them and effectively enabling their addiction and potentially shunning them and pushing them towards even more dangerous behaviors. Neither option is appealing and neither gets close to solving the actual problem at hand.

In some extreme instances, they can become victims of violent or destructive behavior committed by the person experiencing the addiction. Sadly, problems like domestic abuse often go hand in hand with alcohol addiction and other forms of addiction. That’s something that’s outlined and explained in the infographic from Behavioral Health Centers.
