The Difference Between CBD Oil and Tincture

The terms CBD oil and CBD tincture are often used interchangeably. They have similar health benefits and can be taken sublingually. However, tinctures and oils are not the same product. While tinctures are alcohol-based oil is not, but there’s more. In this guide, we compare CBD tincture vs oil to help you make an informed choice on which is best.

What is CBD Tincture?

CBD tinctures are alcohol-based extracts that result from industrial hemp. Manufacturers use food-grade ethanol alcohol to extract CBD from industrial hemp which often results in a bitter taste. CBD tinctures contain less than 0.3% of THC. However, some manufacturers mix CBD and THC in their tinctures resulting in a THC CBD tincture. These types of tinctures contain different ratios of CBD and THC and work differently from CBD-only tinctures.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the hemp plant and mixing it with a carrier oil, such as coconut or MCT oil. It is usually taken orally by placing a few drops under the tongue and allowing it to be absorbed into the bloodstream. CBD oil can also be added to food or drinks.

Overall, both CBD oil and CBD tincture are effective ways to consume CBD, and the choice between the two comes down to personal preference and desired method of consumption.

How To Take CBD Tinctures and Oils?

  • Sublingual administration

Tinctures are administered by using a dropper to deliver drops under the tongue. When taken sublingually, CBD travels through these blood vessels and moves directly to the bloodstream. For maximum absorption, the tincture should be held under the tongue for 90 seconds before swallowing.

  • Orally

You can also incorporate CBD tinctures into your favorite meals and drinks. Common foods which can be enjoyed with CBD tincture include fruit juice, soups, and salad dressings. While this is a great way to enjoy the benefits of CBD, it may take longer to feel the onset effects. Usually, most individuals need to wait for about an hour or two.

CBD Tincture Vs Oil

CBD oil and tinctures offer similar therapeutic benefits since they contain the same active ingredient. However, they have differences such as:

  • Taste

CBD oil has an unpleasant taste when consumed orally, therefore most consumers usually mix it with other foods or substances. Tinctures, on the other hand, have a slightly more pleasant taste as compared to CBD oil due to their alcohol percentage. Manufacturers blend their tinctures with delicious flavors like vanilla, chocolate, coconut, peach, etc. making them more enjoyable.

  • Shelf life

CBD tinctures last longer than CBD oils when stored properly. The alcohol content in tinctures acts as a preservative making them last longer. Studies note an ordinary CBD oil can last up to 18 months under proper storage conditions. You can extend the life of CBD products by keeping them away from direct sunlight.

  • Effects

CBD oil contains ingredients such as MCT oil which absorbs cannabinoids effectively. CBD tinctures on the other hand contain alcohol which is less effective in absorbing Cannabinoids. This makes CBD tincture less effective than CBD oil.

Which Is Better CBD Oil or Tincture?

CBD tincture is convenient but contains alcohol which can be unsuitable for some people. CBD oil on the other hand is just as convenient as CBD tincture but lacks alcohol. Furthermore, a mixture of CBD + THC oil will give the combined benefits of both compounds. While CBD may sound superior, choosing CBD oil or tincture depends on individual preferences.
