Blepharoplasty : Eyelid Surgery
Blepharoplasty is cosmetic eyelid surgery to reduce excess skin on the upper and/or lower eyelids and eliminate bags under the eyes.
Operations to rejuvenate the orbito-eyelid region have become increasingly common in recent years. Under-eye bags, wrinkles, fine lines and excess skin are just some of the imperfections that can be resolved with blepharoplasty , or plastic surgery to improve the appearance of the eyelids.
When is blepharoplasty recommended?
Blepharoplasty is recommended in certain cases:
the presence of bags due to an accumulation of periorbital fat
blepharochalasis (or blepharodermachalasis), i.e. sagging upper eyelid skin leading to drooping eyelids, i.e. excess skin resulting in folds that can cover the entire palpebral crease
fat depletion in certain areas of the lower eyelid, which can lead to the formation of dark circles, i.e. dark furrows
eyelid swelling, which can cause discomfort such as redness, watering or a narrowing of the visual field.
All these factors contribute to making the eyes look tired, puffy and aged.
What is blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to remove the fatty hernias that make up the eyelid fat sacs and excess eyelid skin, as well as any excess muscle. Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelids only, or on the lower eyelids only, depending on the case and need. If, on the other hand, blepharoplasty is performed on both the upper and lower eyelids, we speak of a complete blepharoplasty.
The operation does not eliminate so-called crow’s feet, i.e. wrinkles on the sides of the eyes, which are only indirectly improved by eyelid distension, or any drooping of the eyebrow.
Course of the intervention
Blepharoplasty in Turkey is part of complex outpatient surgery, which does not require the patient to be hospitalized. Ambulatory surgery should not be confused with day surgery or day hospital. At the time of surgery, the surgeon will evaluate with the patient and the anesthetist the possibility of performing the operation under local anesthesia or with conscious or deep sedation. It is not possible to perform operations under general anesthesia.
The operation may involve removing excess skin, reducing or relocating pockets of fat and reorganizing the eyelid muscles to modify the “cut” of the eye.
Upper blepharoplasty can be performed via a transconjunctival incision (internal, through the conjunctiva or inner surface of the eyelid), or external, which involves an incision designed to mask subsequent scarring in the natural folds of the eyelids.
Lower blepharoplasty is performed either transconjunctivally or through an external incision made a few millimeters below the eyelash line.

How much does a blepharoplasty operation cost?
Blepharoplasty price in Turkey varies depending on whether it is performed only on the upper or lower eyelids, or whether it is a complete procedure. In Istanbul, a full blepharoplasty costs €2,900. To access the service, it is necessary to book a complex outpatient surgical visit (even if you already have a medical prescription) with one of the specialists who will perform the operation.
The cost of the operation also includes post-operative monitoring and medication.
Duration of blepharoplasty
The result of surgery may vary according to the physical condition of the patient’s face or the biological age of the skin. The duration of the result is also individual, not least because the procedure does not halt the physiological aging process. However, in most cases, the results will last for years, and in others they may even be permanent.
