Fall Hair Care Routine: Curly Hair Edition

During fall, curly hair becomes extremely frizzy and unmanageable. Especially women seek ways to manage their messy manes and look more presentable.

Moreover, the curly hair care and styling product market was evaluated at $9716 million in 2021 and is expected to reach $15654.8 million by 2031.

Though there are many choices, it also confuses them and leads to investing in the wrong products!

However, this guide will help you know the products and routines you must follow. So, let’s get started!

1. Prioritize hydration

During fall, humidity levels drop, making curly hair dry and wiry. This season, your hair can be annoying and stubborn to manage.

To deal with this, most people with curls cover their hair with protective clothing and never rock their natural curls.

However, this fall, you can let your curls free if you invest in a hydrating and nourishing shampoo for curly hair! Pair it with a hydrating conditioner that locks in all the moisture the weather strips off.

Don’t forget to invest money and time in deep conditioning treatments like leave-in conditioners and masks!

2. Cleanse gently

Avoid overwashing your hair as much as you can. This strips your hair of natural oil and makes it look dry and brittle.

Since the weather is cooler, you may naturally want to wash your hair less frequently. However, don’t feel guilty about this; it only helps your hair’s health!

When you wash your hair, make sure you treat it gently. Don’t use scalding hot water because you feel cold. Alternatively, don’t scrub hard and fast because you don’t want to stand in the shower for too long. Be gentle with your mane.

On some days, try co-washing – use conditioner only – to avoid making your hair dry.

3. Lock in all the moisture

Every time you wash your hair, don’t depend on conditioners and deep conditioners during the fall. Go a step further to show some love to your hair with nourishing oils like:

  • Jojoba oil
  • Argan oil
  • Grapeseed oil
  • Coconut oil
  • Olive oil

Apply these while your hair is still damp. This creates a protective coating on your hair and prevents the moisture from leaving your hair.

4. Experiment with protective styling

If the weather in your area is extremely dry, it’s best not to rock an open hair during the fall. Instead, you can experiment with attractive yet protective hairstyles that protect your hair from the weather and reduce breakage due to manipulation.

Some great options are braids, buns, and twists. There are many other options, so contact the nearest hairstylist with experience in curly hair to no more.

However, remember to avoid excessively tight hairstyles, which pressure your hair and make it brittle.

5. Protect hair from natural elements

During fall, the weather is pretty unpredictable. It’s dry and cold in one instant, windy in the next, and rainy in the other moment!

Make sure you protect your hair from the wind and rain. You can use a silk or satin-lined hat when you go outdoors. These are known to reduce friction and prevent moisture loss.

Similarly, you must also use silk or satin pillowcases to reduce friction damage while you toss in your sleep.

6. Stay hydrated

Be cautious of your diet to ensure:

  • Beur hair stays healthy because beauty begins from within.
  • Drink lots of water and eat juicy, vitamin-rich fruits.
  • Incorporate lots of green leafy vegetables and lean protein in your meal.

These will ensure that your hair roots stay strong and there’s optimum oil production from your scalp.

7. Be careful while putting on turtlenecks

Chunky turtleneck sweaters and scarves are a must-have to stay warm during the fall. However, these materials tease the ends of curly hair and cause frizz and breakage.

To deal with this, tie your hair in a loose bun or ponytail with silk scrunchies. Make sure you choose a comfortable hairstyle that can stay put throughout the day.

These will keep your hair tucked away from the harsh, warm clothing and thus reduce damage.

Before you put on turtlenecks, wear a silk bonnet so there’s no contact between the sweater and your hair. Take the bonnet off once you wear it.

8. Use styling products sparingly

During the fall, don’t apply a lot of styling products. They’ll weigh down your hair, especially if they are heavy or extremely sticky. If you’re already using

Instead, experiment – starting with a pea-sized amount – with the volume of product you use to check which works the best.

You must also avoid using products with the consistency of butters. Anything thicker than lotion consistency is a complete NO!

9. Don’t skip curl enhancers

Buy curl-enhancing lotions and serums, or use homemade flaxseed gel at home. If bringing your curls back in the dry seasons is extremely tough, these are a must-use!

Conclusion

In fall, curly hair care is mostly about moisture and protection. Lastly, remember that your hair is unique from others’ curls. So, experiment and figure out the best option for you!
