Sergey Tokarev’s Vision: Nurturing Women Leaders in STEM

In the realm of science and technology, Sergey Tokarev, the IT entrepreneur and co-founder of the investment group Roosh, stands as a beacon for advocating gender equality. On the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Tokarev reiterated the importance of recognizing and celebrating women’s achievements in these fields to address the prevailing gender inequalities.

Sergey Tokarev’s commitment to gender equality extends to the Roosh ecosystem companies, where he emphasizes its importance from both a business and societal perspective. Teams with an equal men/women ratio, according to Tokarev, are more likely to generate innovative solutions. Despite ongoing efforts by businesses and governments, gender imbalances persist globally, emphasizing the need for sustained advocacy.

STEM is FEM, an educational project initiated by Sergey Tokarev, plays a pivotal role in promoting science among Ukrainian girls. Focusing on informal education, the project encourages young girls to pursue STEM specialties, introducing them to female researchers through educational modules, courses, and webinars. STEM is FEM also aims to create a community of like-minded individuals who can support and motivate each other.

One compelling story from the STEM is FEM community is that of Yuliia Tkachenko, an 18-year-old student who delved into drone technology in high school. Identifying a limitation in Bayraktar drones operating in adverse weather conditions, Tkachenko proposed a solution: adding a laser sight to improve their performance. Tkachenko, now a student at Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, is actively involved in an IT startup in the healthcare sector, showcasing the impact of initiatives like STEM is FEM on nurturing young talents.

Nadiia Kasyanchuk, another member of the STEM is FEM community, is pursuing her master’s program at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland. Specializing in medical biotechnology and genomic data research related to Parkinson’s disease, Kasyanchuk has not only co-authored articles published in Scopus-indexed journals but has also received multiple awards at prestigious international conferences. Additionally, Kasyanchuk contributes to STEM education by teaching the course “Human Genetics & Society” at the Kyiv School of Economics.

STEM is FEM emerges as a beacon of educational transformation, specifically designed to champion diversity in STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) among young girls. Breaking away from traditional educational models, this project creates a thriving community where like-minded individuals converge. In this community, girls actively support each other, exchange ideas, and collectively embark on a journey of growth.

STEM is FEM earned the distinguished title of “Honorary Ambassador of Ukraine in the field of scientific and educational diplomacy” from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2023. This recognition highlights the project’s commitment to promoting diversity in STEM education and contributing to diplomatic initiatives in the educational landscape.
