Everything You Need to Know About Dentures

Dentures are a type of dental care that helps support those who have missing teeth. Dental clinics offer these services to support those with missing teeth by restoring function to the teeth and mouth area.

What are dentures?

Dentures are defined as artificial or prosthetic sets of teeth that aim to support your mouth by restoring function to it. These sets of teeth are fitted on top of the gum line, and give the appearance and function of real teeth. Dentures are made to support people who have loss of function through missing teeth. There are different kidneys of dentures to know about.

The different kinds of dentures

When you visit your dental care provider, your dentist will assess the current state of your teeth and decide which kind of dentures you need. There are two types available. These are:

Full dentures: Full dentures cover the entire upper or lower jaw, replacing where the original teeth would have been. They are fixed using either a temporary denture cement or by implants.

Partial dentures: These kinds of dentures are made to fit within the gaps in your mouth. They fit between your teeth in replacement of the missing teeth. They are made for people who have missing teeth but still have some of their original teeth remaining too.

How do dentures benefit you?

Dentures are a highly beneficial solution for those with missing teeth. When you have missing teeth, whether you have no real teeth or just a few, dentures can help restore function to your mouth. For example, eating or seeking can become difficult with missing teeth, so dentures can help tackle this problem.

Another reason as to why dentures are beneficial is that they can help support your facial muscles. This can effectively help prevent sagging. Dentures are also a great option for those with too few teeth for other supportive options to be fitted.

Moreover, dentures can help restore confidence. Many people can become insecure about their smile when they have missing teeth. As dentures look just like real teeth, this can combat insecurities and allow you to not worry about your smile any longer.

What are implant-supported dentures?

Implant-supported dentures are a type of denture that offer a few more benefits than standard dentures. Implant supported dentures are often easier to maintain, and look better appearance wise. There are two kinds of supported dentures to choose from. These are ball-retained dentures and bar-retained dentures. Your dentist will go over these two kinds and decide with you which type is best for you.

Do I need dentures?

If you suffer from missing teeth and struggle to perform tasks such as eating and speaking, you will benefit from dentures. Whether you need full dentures, partial dentures, or implant-supported dentures depends on the current state of your teeth. Your dental care provider will create a dental plan for you based on your current oral health.
